Moses and the Burning Bush: When God Calls the Unqualified

Moses was not exactly living his best life. Forty years earlier, he'd been a prince of Egypt. Now? He was a fugitive shepherd in the middle of nowhere, watching his father-in-law's sheep wander around a mountain called Horeb. If Moses had a LinkedIn profile, it would have needed a serious update.

Then one ordinary afternoon, something caught his eye. A bush was on fire — not unusual in the desert — except this bush wouldn't burn up. The flames kept dancing, but the branches stayed green. Moses did what any of us would do: he walked over for a closer look.

God got right to the point. He had seen the misery of His people enslaved in Egypt. He had heard their cries. And He was sending a rescuer. The rescuer's name? Moses.

Moses immediately reached for his list of objections. "Who am I to go to Pharaoh?" he asked — which, honestly, was fair. Runaway shepherds with a criminal record don't usually get meetings with kings.

But God didn't answer the "who am I" question with a pep talk about Moses' hidden potential. He answered with something better: "I will be with you." The mission wasn't going to succeed because Moses was impressive. It would succeed because of who was going with him.

When Moses asked, "But who should I say sent me?" God gave a name unlike any other: "I AM WHO I AM. Tell them I AM has sent you." Not "I was." Not "I might be." I AM — present tense, permanently.

Moses walked down that mountain still nervous, still stammering, still Moses. But he walked down with marching orders and a promise. The bush stopped burning. The calling never did.
